Toronto based Thai restaurant Salad King has been selected to cater the upcoming United States presidential debate.
Lawan Charoensuk, a spokesperson for Salad King, held a press conference out front of the restaurant’s Yonge Street location after the announcement of the partnership.
“We’re eager to support the American democratic process,” said Charoensuk.
“All of us at Salad King are strong believers in the power and value of public debate.”
Salad King is best known as the go-to caterer for student events, due to their “bang for your buck” type business model.
The restaurant will be partnering with the American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the network hosting and broadcasting the debate.
Salad King has confirmed it will be taking the opportunity to roll out a special debate themed menu. The menu will feature Chicken Coconut Milk Soup in honour of Kamala Harris and plain noodles with butter for Donald Trump.
Historically candidates have provided a rider style list of foods they would like in their green room. This year’s debate will be the first where moderators, audience members, crew and candidates’ entourages will be provided with a buffet style meal.
Leaked text messages between ABC president, Craig Erwich and a communications intern may reveal why ABC made the unprecedented move to provide free food.
“Buttigieg and Warren are out unless there are snacks,” said the intern in charge of coordinating promotional appearances and support within the candidates’ inner circles. “That goes double for J.D. Vance.”
“I know a guy,” Erwich replied, according to the leaked messages.
The strategy seems to have worked with many politicians and past debate moderators expressing their jealousy.
“I would have stayed in the race if I’d had known Salad King was involved,” said Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in a podcast appearance Thursday.
“Damn,” read a Tweet posted by Bob Scheiffer of CBS. “#saladking”
ABC is currently dealing with the fallout from the leaked text messages which allegedly revealed higher-ups admitting NBC is “more based”. They did not respond to requests for comment in time for publication.
