The Sheldon and Tracy Levy Student Learning Centre (SLC) is the beating heart of Toronto Metropolitan University’s (TMU) campus. It is known as a place where students go to enrich their learning and connect with their peers on each of the eight themed floors.

Floors like “The Beach” give students the opportunity to relax and be productive (yup, it’s possible) while floors like “The Sun” allow students to immerse themselves in a new world of academic potential.

This year, some students claim the SLC may have gone too far with a new floor to be named “The Dog Fighting Floor.”

This addition to the SLC doesn’t offer any learning opportunities and is more so just a place to bet on illegal dog fighting.

The floor has sparked some controversy among the student population with many complaining that the initial buy-in is too steep

“I'm a student, you know? Between tuition and textbooks I don’t have a ton of money to throw around. The SLC should be a place where students can go and watch dogs take up arms without breaking the bank,” said one student who chose to remain anonymous.

Additionally, many have complained about uncertainty over what happens to the dogs that don’t make it out of the fights.

TMU responded to these criticisms by introducing a new “zero waste program” in collaboration with the Pitman Hall cafeteria.

The Abnormal School also spoke to a faculty member who had some words of caution for students planning on engaging in illegal dog fighting: “don’t always bet on the biggest dog, the term is underdog for a reason.”

Know your limit, play within it.
